Travis grew up in Utah and California, which he attributes to his passion for the mountains and snowboarding as well the ocean and surfing. After receiving a BFA in Illustration from Utah Valley University, Travis attended Laguna College of Art + Design, earning his Masters degree in painting. He then went on to teach university art courses, including anatomy for artists.
After discovering ocularistry, Travis apprenticed under the well-known ocularist Rich Caruso, BCO at Eye Prosthetics of Utah from 2018 to 2021. During that time, he learned a wide array of advanced fitting techniques to enhance the look and feel of a custom prosthetic eye. He has made prosthetic eyes for hundreds of patients across a broad range of ages and backgrounds, including but not limited to pediatric retinoblastoma survivors, infants with congenital microphthalmia or anophthalmia, and teens to adults recovering from disease or trauma.
Travis's successful training resulted in him establishing Advanced Eye Prosthetics in 2021. He is passionate about utilizing his 20 years of extensive art experience to help others by creating the most lifelike prosthetic eyes available, and he strives to innovate new techniques in the fabrication process to best meet patients' needs. He has been sought after by patients in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming and looks forward to helping you.
Shar grew up in southern California but decided to leave the land of sunshine to attend Ricks College in Idaho. She loved living somewhere with full seasons, but did not love the windchill of Idaho winters. She thought about returning to California to finish her undergrad, but decided instead to try out the mountains of Utah. There she earned her BS in English at BYU and fell in love with hiking, rock climbing, and the native Utahan she married. Travis and Shar are now raising their four daughters in Utah, all who love the mountains and beaches as much as their parents.
Shar is passionate about children's literature and creativity in childhood education. She is picture book author and technical writer and spent 20 years helping create award-winning language & literacy software for young learners at Waterford Institute, Imagine Learning, and Alegra Learning.
When Travis suggested they start their own ocular prosthetics company, Shar was fully on board. She loved seeing the joy that helping others had brought to Travis throughout his apprenticeship and was excited for them to continue helping even more people as a team.
Shar has managed the practice for the past year, and while the experience has been a career shift with a big learning curve, she appreciates the challenge. Meeting patients and helping them get the care they deserve are her newest passions.
